Nature Drives are a great way to explore Hiltaba.

How to buy permits for more than one vehicle:

Choose your preferred permit option - 1 day, 2 day or 3 day drive permit.

Add this to your shopping card and then repeat the process to add permits for each additional vehicle accompanying you.

Then click on Proceed to Checkout to pay for all these at once.

The drives are fully signposted, and track notes are available that detail some fascinating insights into the ecosystems - it's remarkable vegetation and animals, geology and pastoral history of the reserve and are easy for self-guided driving.


Some of the drives are accessed through locked gates. You will need to use the code provided in your Booking Confirmation to unlock and lock the gate as you go.

Please be aware of the safety information provided in the FAQs and at the Visitor Reception area before heading off on Nature Drives.

It is important to keep only to those tracks marked with the appropriate Nature Drive signs indicated on the track notes.

Off track driving is strictly prohibited. Avoid driving on wet and boggy roads to keep our roads in good condition and if you get stuck do not leave your vehicle.

Nature Drives are suitable for properly equipped 4WD vehicles. For your safety, it is advisable to keep vehicle speed below 40km on all Nature Reserve tracks.

Driving from Adelaide:

4WDs are recommended for travelling to Hiltaba. High clearance 4WDs are required for the Nature Drives.

You should check road conditions before travelling. There are heavy penalties for travelling on a closed road.

1. Via Mt Ive: From Adelaide the total distance is approx. 650km [310km sealed road to Pt Augusta, 69km to Iron Knob and approx. 250 km of UNSEALED ROAD from Iron Knob to Hiltaba]. The last fuel stop is Mt Ive which has unleaded and diesel fuel, open 7 days. Phone 08 8648 1817.

2. Via Wirrulla: From Adelaide the total distance is approx. 750km [680km sealed road to Wirrulla and 70km UNSEALED ROAD from Wirrulla to Hiltaba]. Wirrulla general store has unleaded and diesel fuel, open 7 days. Phone 08 8626 8038.

It is recommended that you fill up at either Mt Ive or at Wirrulla as there is no fuel available at Hiltaba.
Recent or impending rain will greatly affect access to and from Hiltaba, and your safety while there.

Weather conditions can be checked at http://www.bom.gov.au/sa/forecasts/map.shtml for weather in the Northwest Pastoral District.

Cancellation Policy

Booking Modifications -

* Bookings can be modified by going to your Reservation Confirmation email and following the links.

* You can request a modification by completing your request/s and sending the Modification Request.

* Staff at Nature Foundation will respond to you within 5-7 business days.

* Confirmed bookings cannot be edited on the day of arrival unless a vacancy/space exists and full payment for any additional bookings are paid for on arrival.

* Any edit requests will be subject to the payment cancellation and refund terms and conditions below.

* Requests to edit confirmed bookings include - number of person/s on the existing booking; change of arrival and or departure date/s; change of accommodation or campsite or campground options; increase and/or decrease of nights; additional or removal of vehicle(s) for nature drives to the existing booking.

Cancellations -
* Bookings can be cancelled by going to your Reservation Confirmation email and following the links.

* You can request a cancellation by completing your request and sending the Cancellation Request.

* You will receive an email confirming your Cancellation Request.

* Staff at Nature Foundation will respond to you within 5-7 days business days.

* Cancellations requested at least 21 calendar days prior to the arrival date of a booking are eligible for a full refund (less an administrative fee of $25.00).

* Cancellations requested less than 21 calendar days prior to the arrival date of a booking are not eligible for a full or partial refund or credit unless the nature reserve and/or accommodation / campground / campsites have been closed by Nature Foundation (subject to the variation clause below).

* Where there are extenuating or unforeseen circumstances from either party (eg severe medical episode; fire conditions) Nature Foundations CEO at their discretion may authorise a full or partial refund or a suspension of the payment as a credit to re-book and use within a 12-month period from the original proposed date of arrival.

* After the 12-month period has expired and if the travel has not occurred 100% of the original payment made is retained by Nature Foundation and the credit cancelled.
